The Blue Boxfish, Ostracion meleagris, otherwise known as the Whitespotted Boxfish, Black Boxfish, Spotted Boxfish, or the Hawaiian Blue Boxfish. This is a unique and quirky aquarium beauty with distinct sexual dimorphisms. The male is known as the Blue Boxfish, because of its stunning blue sheen with ochre spots, while the female is known as the Black Boxfish due to its black body and white spots. They can grow to be 10 inches and require a tank no less than 100 gallons if kept individually, and no less than 150 gallons if kept in a group. You can keep multiple Blue Boxfish in one tank, with one male to multiple females. They should be fed an omnivore diet, consisting of large chunks of fresh or frozen meaty foods. These foods include krill, raw table shrimp, squid, clam and mussel. You should also include occasional supplements with some type of herbivore diet containing marine algae. If underfed they will nibble on sessile invertebrates, and when stressed, release a poisonous substance from its mucous glands that is deadly to tank mates. The Blue Boxfish can be difficult to care for, therefore we recommend this fish to be cared for by expert aquariasts. Although the Blue Boxfish can seem difficult to keep, it can thrive if tank conditions are calibrated just right. And if kept successfully, the Blue Boxfish will undoubtedly be a centerpiece of any tank. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78?? F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
The Blue Boxfish (Ostracion meleagris): A Captivating Enigma in Saltwater Marine Aquariums
The Blue Boxfish (Ostracion meleagris), stands as an intriguing addition to your saltwater marine aquarium. Originating from the warm and tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean, spanning from the Indian Ocean to the coasts of the central and western Pacific, this species thrives within the intricate ecosystems of coral reefs and rocky formations.
Habitat and Compatibility with Reefs
The Blue Boxfish is often found near coral-rich environments, where it takes refuge among crevices and coral branches. While its charming appearance might suggest otherwise, caution is warranted when considering its compatibility with reef environments. This species, while captivating, has a distinct diet preference for small invertebrates and algae, which could result in undesirable interactions with delicate corals and other reef inhabitants. The Blue Boxfish, like most boxfish, are not reef safe and are considered 'expert only" due to their delicate nature.
Size and Lifespan
With its striking geometric patterns and bold blue hues, the Blue Boxfish is a visual marvel that can grow up to 7 inches long. When provided with an optimal environment and appropriate care, this species has the potential to live for approximately 5 to 10 years, offering enthusiasts a rewarding and enduring marine companion.
Diet in Captivity
In captivity, emulating the Blue Boxfish's natural diet is crucial for its health and vibrancy. A diet primarily consisting of algae-based foods, supplemented with high-quality marine pellets and occasional offerings of live or frozen invertebrates, supports their nutritional needs and ensures their well-being. Consistently providing a balanced diet maintains their captivating appearance and vibrant colors.
Aquaculture and Availability
As of now, aquaculturing the Blue Boxfish remains a challenging endeavor, and thus, most specimens available to hobbyists are wild-caught. While efforts continue to advance the field of aquaculture, responsible sourcing, and ethical collection practices play a pivotal role in supporting the marine aquarium trade and the conservation of marine ecosystems.
Compatibility with Other Fish and Invertebrates
Their territorial tendencies and potential for aggression should be considered when considering tank mates for the Blue Boxfish. Careful selection of tank companions is crucial to ensure a peaceful coexistence. Fish species of comparable size and assertiveness, such as the Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus) and the Humu Humu Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus), can be suitable companions.
Sexual Dimorphism and Temperament
The Blue Boxfish displays pronounced sexual dimorphism. The male is known as the Blue Boxfish because of its stunning blue sheen with ochre spots, while the female is known as the Black Boxfish due to its black body and white spots. In terms of temperament, this species is known for its territorial behavior and occasional bouts of aggression. Providing ample hiding places and ensuring tank mates are compatible with its disposition is essential.
Detailed Tank Requirements
Creating a well-suited environment for the Blue Boxfish necessitates an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 180 gallons. This size allowance provides ample space for swimming and exploration. Water conditions resembling their natural habitat are vital, including a pH level ranging from 8.1 to 8.4, a salinity of 1.020 to 1.025, and a temperature ranging from 72 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Compatible Tank Mates
Incorporating compatible tank mates requires careful consideration of size, temperament, and specific behavioral traits. Companions that can peacefully coexist with the Blue Boxfish include the Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus), the Humu Humu Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus), and the Bicolor Angelfish (Centropyge bicolor). These species possess the resilience and vigor to withstand potential interactions.
Alternative Common Names
The Blue Boxfish may also be recognized by its alternate common names, including the Blue Spotted Boxfish and the Polkadot Boxfish.

I bought this Blue Boxfish here and to show you how hardy this guy is, he was the most active of 5 fish I had delivered when outside temp in MN was 21 degree out and bag water was at 68 degrees. All survived after 2 1/2 hr slow drip acclimation. He is a colorful little guy to watch darting around the tank. He is constantly on the move searching for food or detritus on the bottom as well as on reef rock. Likes to dart in and out of rock. He is getting much better at snagging Mysis shrimp I drop in before the other 6 fish hog it all, especially my Hamlet Indigo who gobbles everything that moves. A joy to watch.
